Facilis Est Descensus Averni (Easy is the Descent to Hell)

Frederic James Shields 1833 - 1911

Summary

Male youth in red robe but otherwide nude is reaching out over a precipice towards a nude female on the right. The female has long blonde hair and flies down into the crevice, beckoning to the youth behind her who has his eyes closed, his arms outstretched and seems to be travelling at speed with his robe flying out behind him. Poppies are strewn across the edge of the precipice. To the right is a mouth of a cave and on the left in the distance are a line of figures working in a field with their backs turned. Red clouds in dark sky.
