East View of Hulme Hall

East View of Hulme Hall

H G James

Summary

A view from the river Irwelll looking towards Hulme Hall. The hall is a half-timbered Tudor building with gables and chimneys galore. One part of the building stands taller than the rest: this is a square tower with a tiled roof, at the bottom of which is a wide gateway that presumably leads through to a courtyard. A wall surrounds the hall, and trees and bushes are seen to the side and beyond. On the back of the mount is pasted an entertaining, but seemingly irrelevant newspaper clipping containing Old Manchester reminiscences (The Manchester Examiner and Times, Thursday, May 3, 1883).
