Summary

George Spencer (1739-1817) became the 4th Duke of Marlborough on the death of his father Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, in 1758. Prior to this, he held the title Marquess of Blandford. He was a nobleman and politician, serving as Lord Chamberlain 1762-63 and Lord Privy Seal 1763-65. He is the great great great grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill. The Duke married Lady Caroline Russell, daughter of the 4th Duke of Bedford, in 1762. They had two sons, George, who succeeded to the Dukedom, and Francis. They had five daughters - Caroline, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Anne and Amelia - all of whom (except the youngest daughter Amelia) are portayed in this picture. The Duke died in 1817. The title Duke of Marlborough had been created by Queen Anne in 1702 for John Churchill, the first Earl of Marlborough. The family resides at Blenheim Palace.
