Actor on Stage 1923 Eric Arthur Rowton Gill 1882-1940 Wood engraving Produced for the Ditchling Amateur Dramatic Sociey, this print may have been made quickly as a favour. Generally, Gill laid equal importance to text and image, but here the lettering is uncharacteristically rough. The fine wood grain is visible horizontally and was used as a basis for the composition. Large areas were cut away from the simple figure, which appears as black lines on white. Gift of Mrs and Miss Rutherston 1928.155
