Freely painted landscape looking across a river to the landscape beyond. In the centre of the composition a tall willow tree is silhouetted against a pale cloudy sky. Smaller trees and bushes line the river's bank and recede into the distance. In the foreground, the surface of the river reflects its surroundings.

View near Lincoln, with Willow Tree about 1810 Peter de Wint 1784-1849 Oil on panel De Wint was an associate of several Romantic writers, including Thomas De Quincey and John Keats. John Clare published a sonnet to him in 1835 declaring That rushy flats, befringed with willow tree, Rivalled the beauties of the Italian skies. The artist also made a watercolour study of this subject which he inscribed 'near Lincoln'. Purchased 1946.164
