View Over Flat Country
Summary
Freely painted oil sketch of flat rural countryside. The landscape, depicted in muted earthy tones, extends towards the horizon and gives the impression of merging with the sky. To the left is a small group of cottages and farm buildings with pale coloured walls and red tiled roofs; to the left and beyond, dark indistinct woodland is visible. To the right, the landscape is largely featureless with subtle changes of light and in the quality of land.

View over Flat Country about 1812 Peter de Wint 1784-1849 Oil on canvas This unidentified view is probably in Lincolnshire, where De Wint spent much of his career. Recording locations was less important to the artist than his emphasis on light, atmosphere and mood. By working directly from nature in painting outdoors Romantic artists broke free of studio conventions and discovered a more personal means of expression. George Beatson Blair bequest 1947.67
