Chepstow Castle from the Wyndcliffe on the River Wye, South Wales

David Cox the Elder 1783 - 1859

Summary

A shady wooded glade with a group of three figures standing on a rocky plateau, to the left, and a little further away, to the right, a single figure stands towards a river. A blue river meanders its way along the bottom of the valley from which rise wooded slopes, surmounted by castle wall ruins; the landscape recedes into the distance until it meets the blue sky.
