Historiated Initial 'D'
Summary
Ink drawing on wood block of the letter 'D', taken from a fifteenth-century Missal (a ceremonial book containing texts and instructions for the celebration of Mass). A holy saint and a winged beast salute one another within the opening of the letter. According to 1904 exhibition catalogue of 'Ruskin Exhibition' (Manchester City Art Gallery) it was one of a number of drawings on wood by Ruskin intended for Modern Painters but later cancelled, as Ruskin found it impossible to have drawings adequately interpreted by wood engraving. A historiated initial is an enlarged letter at the beginning of a paragraph that contains a picture.
