Summary

Carved ivory chess set in a walnut wood case. The figures represent the officers of the East India Company (informally known as 'John Company') and the army of Tipu Sultan (1750-1799). Ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan fought many wars against neighbouring states and strongly resisted the imperialist advances of the East India Company, but was defeated and killed at the battle of Seringapatnam in 1799. Tipu's armoury was broken up by the British and many pieces eventually sold to private and public collections in Britain.
