Path through the Wood

John Nash 1893 - 1977

Summary

The contrasts between light and dark are particularly sharp in this scene depicting a walkway through some woods. Whilst there are deep black shadows the details of the scene are picked out in strong highlights so that an interesting pattern forms where the light falls between the trees from the right and also where it picks out the various forms of the tree trunks and leaves. The darkest part of the composition is in the foreground of the scene as a large trunk on the right casts a shadow across the top and bottom edge that frames the scene and leads the eye towards the centre. In the centre of the composition, acting as an axis, is the pathway that runs almost vertically from the foreground into the distance. The trees therefore grow either side of it, balancing one another out and in some places appearing almost like an archway over the path. As the path stretches back the trees become denser and therefore it becomes more shadowed at the heart of the composition.
