The Drachenfels, Germany

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775 - 1851

Summary

A riverside landscape with steep rocky mountains on each side. There is a roadway at the foreground left which is cut into the base of the rock at the left, to follow the river. At the forground left several horses have been harnessed to a masted boat in the shallows and are pulling it back onto land. There is a man at the right of the line of horses. At the foreground right a small rowing boat is roped to the prow of a larger boat, seen at the extreme right edge. At the right midground a large white building with a central bell tower can be seen. There are mountains in the background.
