Miss Rosamond Croker

Summary

Young female figure with dark hair pinned in curls around the head. A ringlet is loose to the right. She is wearing a satin-like dress off the shoulders with a brooch pinned at the chest and a waitband. A string of pearls goes from around her neck down to her waist. Her right arm, where a bracelet can be seen, is bent at the elbow with the hand held up holding an object. There is a landscape behind the figure, with a leafy tree to the right. Rosamond Esther Elizabeth Pennell (1810 - 1906) was the daughter of William Pennell, Consul-General in Brazil at the start of the 19th century. Aged only six weeks old, she became the adopted daughter of John Wilson Croker, statesman and essayist, and from that time was known as Miss Croker. Lawrence's painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1827 (No.26). In 1832 Miss Croker married Sir John Barrow, Bart. C.M.G. who died in 1876.
