Lady Acland and Children

Summary

Lady Acland is seated in the centre of the print against a landscape background. She is dressed in a simple empire line dress. She turns round to face her son, Arthur, who is standing beside her, to her right. She has her right arm round him with her left arm in her lap. Her older son, Thomas, stands behind her on her seat. Both boys wear dresses.There is a dog's head bottom right. Lady Lydia Acland was the only daughter of Henry Hoare of Mitcham (a banking family). She married Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet. He was Cousins' patron who had funded his apprenticeship with Samuel William Reynolds. He commissioned Cousins to engrave his family portrait by Lawrence in 1826. Cousins went on to become the main interpreter of Lawrence's paintings in print. The elder boy, Thomas Dyke Acland, was born in 1809 and succeeded his father as 11th Baronet. He was for many years a Member of Parliament. He died in 1898. The younger son, Arthur Henry Dyke Acland, was born in 1811. He took the name of Tyoyte and died in 1857. Lady Acland died in 1856.
