Summary
Half-length female portrait of Lady Anne Bingham (1767-1840), seated and facing the observer. Her diaphanous dress is tied at the waist and has a cowl neckline. She wears a large broad-brimmed hat and has a 'tail' of hair falling down over her left shoulder. Lady Anne Bingham was the youngest daughter of Sir Charles Bingham, 1st Earl of Lucan, and Lady Lucan, a skilful copyist. Her older sister was Lavinia, Countess Spencer. She died unmarried in 1840. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786. Reynolds painted Lady Anne's portrait in 1786 as a companion piece to a portrait of her sister.
