Portrait of Mrs Frances Anne Crewe as St Genevieve, whole-length, sitting reading in front of a rocky mound, chin resting on her right hand, hair dressed with a veil, dog at feet; five lambs lying to left, one nibbling at a plant to right; landscape with a river in the distance to left; after the painting by Reynolds in a private collection. Frances Anne Crew (1744-1818) was a leader of fashion and whig hostess; daughter of the politician Fulke Greville and the Irish poet Frances Macartney; in 1766, she married John Crewe, who became 1st Baron Crewe of Crewe in 1806 and Frances, Lady Crew.
