Summary

Young girl with a scarf round her head showing whisps of hair over her forehead. She is three-quarter length with arms folded in front of her and hands clasped left over right at the waist. Her simple dress has a bow at the neckline and an apron over it which is draped over her right arm She carries a basket (or 'pottle') of strawberries under her right arm.There is a rocky landscape in the background. There were market gardens in London growing fruit for Covent Garden and other London markets. Women carried fruit a considerable distance through the London streets. Many moved to London for this seasonal work. They were admired for their strength, ability to endure hardship and work ethic. Here, the young girl is dressed fashionably, suggesting wealth.
