Summary
Ann Day (Lady Fenhoulet) 'wears a fashionable mushroom-shaped hat which, like her dress, is elaborately trimmed with ruched ribbons. The picture was painted in the winter months, hence the hooded mantle and the muff; there are flowers at her bosom.' (Manning) The Town and Country Magazine for 1770 states that Ann Day was born near Plymouth in humble life; became acquainted with Lord Edgecumbe, and came to live in London. She married Sir Peter Fenhoulet who had lost his first wife and been knighted in 1761. They afterwards separated and she went to Calais with her two daughters. The Magazine states that her face may be seen under a bonnet in every print shop in town inscribed with the title Lady Fenhoulet. The name Miss Day appears in the Reynolds pocket-books of 1757 and 1760.
