Summary

Sir Jeffrey Amherst K.B. (1717-1797) Commander in Chief of the British Forces in America from 1758 to 1764, General Commander in Chief of the British Troops in England from 1778 to 1782; And again from January 1793 to February 1795. Reynolds references Amherst's greatest achievement, the conquest of Canada in 1760 during the Seven Years War in various ways. He shows the sitter wearing the ribbon and star of the knight of the Order of Bath which he received for this victory. There is a map of the "Plan of the Island of Montreal & its Environs" beneath his helmet and in the background canoes guided by the Iroquois negotiate rapids on the Saint Lawrence River.
