Sir Banastre Tarleton (1754 Liverpool -1833) was a soldier and politician. He was an army officer in the American War of Independence from 1775 to 1781 with a reputation for both leadership skills and brutality. He was later MP for Liverpool. His wealth came from his merchant father's business in the American colonies and the trade of enslaved people. As such he spoke against abolition in parliament.
