Lady Jane Halliday

Sir Joshua Reynolds (after) 1723 - 1792

Summary

Full length portrait of Lady Jane Halliday (nee Tollemache), the youngest daughter of the 4th Earl of Dysart and Lady Grace Carteret. In 1771 she eloped to Gretna Green with her first husband, John Delap Halliday, the son of a Scottish plantation owner in the Caribbean and a major in the army. She is positioned right of centre, and stepping forward with her right leg. She holds her skirts with her right hand whilst holding her left arm out. She looks towards the left. Her puff sleeved dress with a sash blows in the wind, revealing her classical-style sandals. The oil painting by Reynolds is in the Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Print published in London in 1779.
