Houses amid trees on the banks of a river
Rembrandt van Rijn (attributed to) 1606 - 1669
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. The drawing shows an expanse of river, with some vertical lines to the left indicating reeds or wooden sticks. The riverbank, in the background, is lined with leafy trees and houses, including a tall building just left of centre. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "10. REMBRANDT (b. 1606; d. 1669) HOUSES AMID TREES ON THE BANKS OF A RIVER Collection of Otto Gutekunst, Esq. Pen and bistre. 9.8 x 21.6 cm. (3 7/8 x 8 1/2 in.). A very beautiful example of Rembrandt's drawing from nature, probably done on the Amstel near Amsterdam. It is comparable to various sketches in Chatsworth of the Amstel near the chateau of Kostverloren (which is also represented in the background of the etching of 1641, H. 177), and it might have been taken from the same place.
