A Bend in the Amstel

Rembrandt van Rijn (attributed to) 1606 - 1669

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. The drawing shows a bridge or fence built across a dip in the ground, which we presume to be a river. Against the right edge of the composition is a large tree, and in the right background are several buildings nestled amongst woodland. To the left is another building and the suggestion of open water with two boats. One of the fine series of landscape studies by Rembrandt originally in the Flinck Collection, four of which were reproduced by the Vasari Society, Pt. III, Nos. 23-26 [With the Manchester City Art Gallery accession numbers: 1932.71.23, 1932.71.24, 1932.71.25 and 1932.71.26]. The same river bend is represented in various aspects in other studies at Chatsworth, i.e. Lippmann 53, 54, and 82 b, and possibly also in Lippmann 71 and 74.
