Study of a Pig

Rembrandt van Rijn (attributed to) 1606 - 1669

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. It is of a pig facing towards the right with its head lowered to eat a plant. It has a thick fringe going down its spine and its tail is lowered. A rope is tied around its neck and extends out of the picture frame at the right edge. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 23 REMBRANDT (b. 1606; d. 1669) STUDY OF A PIG British Museum, P. p. 2-117. From the Payne-Knight Collection. Pen and bistre. 10 x 14.1 cm. (3 15/16 x 5 1/2 in.). The two drawings here described [referring also to the reproduction with Manchester City Art Gallery accession number: 1932.73.22] came to the British Museum under the name of Titian. Comparison with two other sheets containing studies of pigs in the collection of M. Léon Bonnat (H. de G. 748-9) has convinced me of the present attribution. A. M. R."
