Two Thatched Cottages

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. The drawing shows two cottages beside a vaguely drawn road which recesses round to the middle ground against the right edge of the composition. The cottage towards the left has plants growing on the roof and pieces of wood holding together the exterior. There is an open window towards the right in front of which stand a woman and a child. The cottage towards the right is drawn with less detail; it has a window, a door and a chimney on the front of the building. There is a suggestion of another roof beyond this cottage. There are grasses growing in the left foreground. A similar row of thatched cottages handled in the same broad manner is seen in a drawing in the National Museum, Stockholm (Teckningar i Nationalmuseum, II. 1906, VII. 1). The present example is much balder in effect, being left almost entirely without background. In style of work both drawings resemble the large etched landscapes of 1641. A. M. H."
