Cottage by a large tree
Rembrandt van Rijn (attributed to) 1606 - 1669
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Rembrandt. The drawing shows a cottage in a rural setting with a large tree in front of it to the left. The cottage has a thatched roof and a window on the right. There are some broken fences by the left edge and in the right foreground. There are more plants in the foreground and trees on the right, while the landscape in the left foreground is more open and barren. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 21 REMBRANDT (b. 1606; d. 1669) COTTAGE BY A LARGE TREE Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth. From the Collection of N. A. Flinck. Pen and bistre, and bistre wash. 17.5 x 26.5 cm. (6 7/8 x 10 7/16 in.). Another of the large series of landscape drawings by Rembrandt from the Flinck Collection. The present example probably dates about 1641, being very near in style to the two long etchings of that date, the 'Cottage with a large tree' (B. 226) and the 'Cottage and the hay-barn' (B. 225). A.
