He was a founder of the Ancoats Brotherhood and lectured for them on Fine Arts. He was a friend of Ford Madox Brown and William Morris. From the Manchester Portraits series of twelve lithographed drawings by William Rothenstein, published in Manchester by J.E. Cornish in 1900.
