Eli the Thatcher 1913 Sir William Rothenstein 1872-1945 Oil on canvas William Rothenstein was at the centre of the Edwardian art world, yet in 1912 he abruptly escaped London and moved his family to Iles Farm at Far Oakridge, in the Cotswolds. He became passionately fond of the area. Eli Gardiner was the local thatcher, admired by Rothenstein for his deep knowledge of the Bible and the natural world. Craggily painted, the portrait is of a salt-of-the-earth English character, heroic and austere. Dr Jane Walker bequest 1939.11
