Daughter Rachel stands to the left dressed in a black cape, carrying a doll, John stands at his mother's side to the right, looking towards the viewer; he is dressed in a Native American costume. The domestic setting of the morning room consists of long embroidered curtains at the window, a bookcase on the wall to the left and a fireplace to the right with a large painting above.

In the Morning Room 1906-10 Sir William Rothenstein 1872-1945 Oil on canvas This is a portrait of Alice Rothenstein, the painter’s wife, with her children John and Rachel. Rachel was born in 1903, and looks about four here. Rothenstein has created a middle-class domestic idyll, with the loving mother at the centre of a sunlit, well-appointed home. This perfect Edwardian lifestyle is a finely-balanced creation. The blossoms in the picture are carried on into the vase on the mantel, showing in a literal way that this life is a continuance of art. Gift of Charles Lambert Rutherston 1925.297
