Summary

A view of Manchester Infirmary from an elevated position on the Market Street side of Piccadilly. The main drive up to the porticoed entrance of the infirmary can be seen to the right: there is a second portico to the left, beneath the domed clocktower of this large neoclassical building. A smaller, temple-like building with a tiled roof and a chimney is to the right of the driveway: this might be a gatehouse. The low perimeter walls of the hospital grounds form stone benches which are crowded with sitters facing towards the public square. More people are walking by to the left. Street vendors have set their hand carts before the statue of Robert Peel. The setts with which the street is paved gleam in the foreground.
