Deansgate

Francis Frith 07/10/1822 - 25/02/1898

Summary

A view down Deansgate, one of the principal streets of Manchester. The view takes in the stately commercial building facades of the Victorian city centre. The shop front that faces onto St Ann's Street, to the right, is less grand. These are the showrooms of Elliott Alston & Co, which appears to be a furniture store. Other businesses along Deansgate include 'Binyons', advertised with a rooftoop sign, which has hats for sale strung down outside the shop from the first floor. The pavements bustle with shoppers; in the foreground a horse and cart delivers goods, well-dressed ladies cross the road and a young man pushes a penny-farthing bicycle.
