Summary

Public: Mug, soft paste porcelain, reeded loop handle, transfer-printed overglaze in black with portrait, arms and battle-ships. Private: Mug, cylindrical, slightly narrowing towards rim from foot, reeded loop handle, transfer-printed overglaze, black, three scenes on exterior. Admiral Boscawen, left of handle, shows three-quarter length portrait of Edward Boscawen (1711-1761), formal dress, facing forward, holding in right hand chart inscribed Louisbourg, Labrado and Louisbo, under his left arm tricorn hat. Beneath ADMIRAL BOSCAWEN. Central print Arms of Boscawen impaling Glanville depicts " Arms: Ermine a rose gules barbed and seeded proper, BOSCAAWEN; impaling quarterly 1st and 4th azure three saltires gold, GLANVILLE; 2nd and 3rd azure three griffins with a chief gold (?)"(Marshall). Arms are printed overglaze black surmounted with boar, surrounded by naval trophy including globe. Right of handle, scene showing two man o'war in full sail. pattern : Admiral Boscawen pattern : Arms of Boscawen impaling Glanville pattern : Man o'war
