teabowl & saucer

Worcester Porcelain Factory 1751

Summary

Public: Teabowl and saucer, soft paste porcelain, transfer printed overglaze in black, depicting fountain, courting couples and guitar player. Private: Teabowl and saucer printed overglaze in black with corresponding scene - La Cascade. Teabowl : slightly tapered footring, everted rim, has blacker less defined print and shows La Cascade into two parts. One part shows an elegantly dressed man and woman standing in garden foreground to left of guitar player, behind whom are man, woman and tree. Other scene shows fountain formed of three putti and goat supported by pedestal of dolphins. Inside well swimming swan print. Saucer : shallow footring, shows whole La Cascade, with man and woman, guitar player and fountain in garden in finer detail and paler black, clearly signed R. Hancock fecit. Black band around inner rim. Black specks and pitting, more evident on teabowl, which also shows signs of misplaced ink from print on footring.
