Summary

Public: Tea cup and saucer, soft paste porcelain, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, blue, turquoise and yellow enamels and gilt with 'Joshua Reynolds' pattern in imitation Japanese 'Kakiemon' style. Private: Circular tea cup and saucer, shallow cup with curved base, narrow footring and ear shaped loop handle, saucer with sloping curved sides and footring. Decorated with 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' pattern. Body of cup divided into four wide vertical panels by four narrow underglaze blue panels, each with circular reserve in white, half way down, filled with floral sprig in red and turquoise. Underglaze blue decorated with gilt scrolls and foliage. White panels filled alternately with scene of phoenix in yellow, red and blue, perched on turquoise rock with flowering branches around, and flower groups in red, blue, turquoise and yellow enamels. Horizontal band of flowers reserved on smudged underglaze blue ground with thin red border line round bottom of body, just above footring. Single sprig of flowers in turquoise, red and yellow in well of cup. Saucer has same pattern radiating out from central circular panel, white with red, yellow and turquoise floral sprig at centre.
