Summary

Public: Four saucers, soft paste porcelain, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, blue, turquoise and yellow enamels and gilt with 'Joshua Reynolds' pattern in imitation Japanese 'Kakiemon' style. Private: Circular saucer with sloping curved sides, footring and slightly everted rim. Decorated with 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' pattern. Four narrow underglaze blue panels, alternating with four wide white panels, radiating out from central circular panel in well, white with sprig of flowers in turquoise, red and yellow. Blue underglaze border round central panel with flowers in reserve and thin gilt and red borders. Blue panels have circular reserve in white, beneath rim, filled with iron red enamel and gilt, to give white petalled daisy motif against red ground. Underglaze blue decorated with gilt scrolls and foliage. White panels filled alternately with scene of phoenix in yellow, red and blue, perched on turquoise rock with flowering branches, and flower groups in red, blue, turquoise and yellow enamels. Gilt rim to saucer. Slight variations in size of each saucer.
