Worcester Porcelain Factory 1751

Summary

Public: Lidded tureen, soft paste porcelain, decorated in underglaze scale blue ground with floral sprays in purple, pink, iron red, yellow and green enamels and gilt. Private: Moulded oval tureen, slightly misshapen, curving in to oval footring and swelling out beneath undulating rim. Four indentations in body beneath rim, two scallop shell handles picked out in gilt. Decorated in underglaze scale blue ground, with mirror-shaped reserves along sides and vase-shaped reserves at each end below handles. Reserves outlined in rococo gilt scrolls and filled with floral sprays, predominantly pink, purple and red. Small gilt floral sprays painted over blue ground between each reserve. Moulded oval domed cover with undulating rim and four indentations. Same pattern of scale blue ground with four reserves filled with enamelled flowers. Moulded artichoke head finial with two leaves and stem, all picked out in gilt. Semi-circular recess at one end for ladle.
