Public: Mug, soft paste porcelain, reeded loop handle, transfer-printed overglaze in black with a portrait and mythological images. Private: Mug, cylindrical, slightly tapered body and everted rim, reeded loop handle. Transfer-printed overglaze, black, exterior. Central image depicts half-length portrait of William Pitt the elder. Head turned outwards, hair in fashion of time, leafed spray beneath. Flanked to right by Fame, winged figure facing right, head turned to left, holding trumpets, blowing trumpet in left hand, clouds behind. Flanked to left by Minerva, figure dressed for battle in flowing robes, plumed helmet and armour seated on cloud, leaning on shield adorned with snake haired head to left, spear held to right.
