tea cup & saucer

Worcester Porcelain Factory 1751

Summary

Tea cup and saucer, wide and low circular body, slightly flared with loop handle, white with coloured abstract bird, fish, water and plant pattern. Self-taught artist, Scottie Wilson was hand-painting the ceramic surfaces of white china plates when he was commissioned by Royal Worcester in 1964 to design a series of tableware that included this tea cup and saucer (see also 1976.46 and 1967.47). Wilson grouped simple, flat silhouetted motifs including a bird, a fish and a tree in patterns that convey a dreamlike world. Stylised abstract designs decorate the rims.
